Merit Badge Counselors

Scouting America's merit badge program is designed to teach Scouts about a wide variety of topics, with the hopes they’ll discover new interests, new hobbies, or maybe even a future career. But the merit badge program doesn’t work without merit badge counselors.

What is a Merit Badge Counselor?

A merit badge counselor is a responsible adult with knowledge and enthusiasm about a career, hobby or other subject who is willing to share that knowledge and enthusiasm with Scouts.

To become a Merit Badge Counselor, follow these steps:

Step 1 Application Process:

  • Apply online to register as a Merit Badge Counselor in your district (see links below). If you wish to counsel in other districts, they can be added at Step 2 in the Info Form.
  • If you already have a current paid registration with Scouting America, select "Multiple" during the application and complete it by signing into my.scouting.org with your existing credentials.
  • If you do not have a current paid membership, you will need to create an account and pay an insurance and background screening fee set by Scouting America.

Step 2 Form Submission:

  • AFTER your application is approved (See Step 1), you will receive a confirmation from Scouting America.
  • Submit your Merit Badge Counselor Information Form indicating which merit badges you would like to teach to [email protected]
  • The District Advancement Chair reviews and approves the form and ensures the selected merit badges are assigned to your profile.

*NOTE: It is not possible to process the Merit Badge Counselor Form unless the applicant has a current Merit Badge Counselor Registration listed in their my.scouting.org account. To check your active registrations, visit https://my.scouting.org/tools/my-applications. Merit Badge Counselor Forms will be returned to applicants who have not yet completed the application and registration step.
