GMC Quality Unit Award:
A New Standard in Scouting Excellence

In 2025, Scouting America discontinued the Journey to Excellence Program, paving the way for a fresh approach to Scouting excellence with the Green Mountain Council's Quality Unit Program. This program was developed by experienced unit-serving commissioners, drawing on their extensive knowledge and expertise to create a comprehensive tool for units committed to providing the finest Scouting experiences to local Vermonters.

The GMC Quality Unit Award Program is designed to be instructive and user-friendly. This program focuses on strengthening key areas of unit programming throughout the year, making it an invaluable resource for units striving for excellence. Units are encouraged to use the criteria and resources provided as building blocks to enhance their programs and ensure continuous improvement.

Units should complete their evaluation in January each year while setting simple goals for the future.

Elevate your unit's Scouting journey to new heights, ensuring that every young Scout in Vermont has access to the best programs possible!

Overview

  • Units establish annual goals at the beginning of each charter year and qualify for recognition based on performance at the close of that year.
  • Units submit scoring results through an online form by January 31. Quality unit status is reviewed by a council representative, usually a commissioner or district executive, to determine if the unit has qualified.

Recognition

  • Units: Pennant streamer for flagpole or room display (no charge).
  • Individuals: Registered members of a unit qualifying for the GMC Quality Unit Award are eligible to wear recognition patches on their uniforms. A council representative will confirm quantities and payment details.
