Saint Michael’s Hosts 48 Boy Scouts in Merit Badge Clinic on
Electronics
Professor William Karstens,
Saint Michael’s College Chairman of the Department of Physics and Chemistry, is
also Assistant Scout Master for Troop 692 in Williston. With those connections,
Dr. Karstens spearheaded a clinic in the physics lab at Saint Michael’s College
on March 28 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Some 48 Boy Scouts participated in the marathon
Electronics Merit Badge Clinic, rotating in two groups of 24 through two
sessions.
“One session involved building a circuit on a breadboard to light an LED
and make measurements of current, voltage and resistance,” Dr. Karstens said.
“The other involved learning how to solder and build a circuit that converts
between decimal and binary numbers, among other things,” he said.
The 48 scouts,
and 12 parent volunteers, came from the Three Rivers District, which includes
the whole Northeast of Vermont, Chittenden County, St. Albans, and more, Dr.
Karstens said.
Program Coordinators were Professor Karstens and Tim
Platt, Advancement Coordinator for the District, who organized the clinic
and purchased all the kits necessary for working on the badge.
