Asbestos Testing at Mount Norris Scout Reservation - UPDATE 2
May 12, 2009
As a member of our Scouting family, we want to take a moment to provide you an update regarding the Mount Norris Scout Reservation.
In March, due to ongoing reports regarding asbestos levels in northern Vermont, our executive board invited the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct routine tests at the camp. Last week the council received test results which revealed a level of substance above the acceptable EPA safety standards required for use this summer.
Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our participants, their families and our staff. Based on these test results and our commitment to the absolute health of our participants the Executive Committee has decided to suspend camp operations for this summer.
Currently, we are working with the EPA to explore and implement several measures that will ensure the camp is absolutely safe for continual use beginning in 2010. Also, we are working to find alternative camp sites for those who have made plans to attend the Mount Norris Scout Reservation this summer.
Members and participants with additional thoughts, or questions regarding finding an alternative camp may contact the council service center at (802) 244-5189 or visit: www.scoutingvermont.org/2009CampOptions.
We will continue to keep you updated throughout this process as we take all the necessary steps to ensure the absolute health and safety of those who enjoy Mount Norris Scout Reservation.
Thank you for your understanding and all you do to support Scouting in Vermont.
