National Leadership Seminar   March 26 - 28, 2010

The National Leadership Seminar is a weekend conference on the skills and attributes of leadership. It is intended primarily to enhance the leadership skills of the Order of the Arrow's key youth and adult members as they seek to improve their services to the Boy Scouts of America and the greater community. The weekend format is designed to complement the longer, more detailed Wood Badge and Youth Leadership Training Programs. Near the end of the seminar, participants make a contract with themselves to apply the skills studied in the seminar on projects in their lodge, council, and community. Because the course content and learning points build from the very first session, arrangements should be made to be present at the camp as close to the 7:00 p.m. arrival time as possible. Participants are to be present for the entire seminar including the closing lunch and graduation. The seminar will conclude by 2:00 PM on Sunday.

Who Should Attend

The NLS is designed for one-time participation; repeat attendance is not encouraged. It is recommended that youth participants be at least 15 years of age or a lodge officer. Completion of the Lodge Leadership Development Course is desirable. The seminar is an intensive experience in learning about the nature of leadership and practicing some of the skills that a leader uses. While it is designed to be fun, the course challenges participants mentally as well. Participants should be developmentally, physically, and mentally prepared to actively engage in an exhausting, invigorating weekend. NER OA Website: www.northeast.oa-bsa.orgExternal Link

Two additional courses will be offered this year: May 1 - 3 at Camp Squanto, Plymouth, MA, of the Old Colony Council and in the fall at Camp Alpine, Alpine, New Jersey.

The deadline for registration is Friday, March 5, 2010. Registrations for the first 84 attendees will be accepted; after that, registrations will be returned.

National Lodge Adviser Training Seminar   March 26 - 28, 2010

The National Lodge Adviser Training Seminar (NLATS) is a weekend conference focusing on the skills and attributes of effective lodge advisers. It is intended primarily to enhance a lodge adviser’s knowledge of and connectivity with the OA’s strategic plan, program and resources, while emphasizing personal skills that are essential to the development of effective youth leadership and ultimately the OA’s service to the council.

Who Should Attend

It is recommended that participants be the Lodge Adviser, Staff Adviser or those with immediate lodge adviser potential (Such as Key Chapter or Committee Advisers) as approved by the local council Scout< executive. Unlike the National Leadership Seminar program, which teaches leadership in a more general sense, this course is specifically designed for Lodge Advisers, Staff Advisers, and those who are preparing to serve in those roles. The sessions are designed to help individuals in these positions understand their roles and provide them with the necessary tools to succeed as a part of the Lodge Key-3.

The National Lodge Adviser Training Seminar (NLATS) is a newer training program. It has been timed to coincide with the National Leadership Seminar also taking place at Alpine that same weekend. The NLATS is limited to 24 participants. For this seminar generally, no more than two participants should register from any lodge or chapter. The course is designed for one-time participation. Repeat participation is not encouraged.

The deadline for registration is Friday, March 5, 2010. Space is limited. Registrations for the first 24 attendees will be accepted; after that, registrations will be returned.
